Review of Men of Honor (2000) by P3Rly D — 11 Jan 2010
Visually flat and mostly formulaic, Men of Honor would drown in melodrama if not for the performances. Cuba Gooding and Robert DeNiro are both fantastic, the arc of their relationship genuinely entertaining.
Since the story is based on truth and navigated by Cuba's emotional intensity, the inspirational factor that I normally find unmoving in films of this design takes good hold of me here. The romantic plot, also, is enjoyable despite the corny dialogue and overt score.
It's well-directed, suspenseful, and holds up fine after a decade.
