Review of Memphis Belle (1990) by Carter Y — 22 Apr 2010
A good old-fashioned, all-American World War II film that is unabashedly cliche-ridden, yet thoroughly enjoyable. 'Memphis Belle' offers a fictitious account of a real-life event: The 10-member crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress bearing the film's namesake has completed 24 missions and has to survive only one more bombing raid over Germany before it completes its tour of duty and the men can return home.
This is not a sweeping war epic -- The bulk of the film takes place within the tight confines of the bomber. Nor is it an emotionally draining examination of the toll of war on the human soul. Rather, it is a rousing wartime drama that is enjoyable in much the same way as a good rousing sports film like 'Hoosiers' or 'Rudy' is.
And enjoyable 'Memphis Belle' is, not in spite of its simplicity, but because of it.
