A stunning masterpiece from top to bottom.

Memories of Murder is from Bong Joon-ho, the same guy that brought us The Host. You can tell this film is cut from the same cloth, since it is directed with such a unique vision that only he could pull it off, let alone pull it off so well.

The film is essentially the Korean Zodiac. Based on a true story about a horrible serial killer, told through the eyes of two reluctantly partnered cops. What makes it unique is that it's directed by a visionary like Joon-ho, who works his magic much the same way he did with The Host.

There are parts in this film that are so gripping, so powerful, and so poignant, and then they are immediately broken up by scenes of incredible hilarity. It doesn't sound like it would work on paper, but it works here even better than it did in The Host. With The Host, you sort of expect things like that, but with this, it comes out of nowhere, and is all the more striking and affecting.

Beyond that, the characters are deeply engaging, with unique quirks that make them very likable, all complete with awesome dramatic arcs.

Add to that the brilliant score, the immaculate photography, and great performances, and you have yourself not only a brilliant film on the surface, but a brilliant film below as well. Memories of Murder is a film that reaches a level of mastery that so many strive for and so few achieve. One of the absolute finest films I've ever seen.
