William Goldman's book, "Which Lie Did I tell: More Adventures in the Screen Trade" has some faccinating insight into this film, and how it kept going back and forth between a serious drama and a light comedy (he wrote the screenplay.
..also wrote Princess Bride and many others). After reading the book I felt I understood more where this movie was coming from, but it's still only 2 stars at most.
