Review of Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) by Filmgrinder S — 13 Nov 2011
Can a film ever be considered flawless, yes this one can. From the opening scene it engages you both emotionally and visually.
The casting is perfect and with some of the best actors on Asian cinema, the acting is excellent. Zhang.
Ziyi as Sayuri is incredible and really should have been Oscar nominated. Ken Watanabe, Michelle Yeoh, Kobi Yakusho, all give immense performances. It is Li Gong as Hatsumomo who shows us what an incredible actress she is.
Not having read the novel, I was unaware of the ending of this film. The ending is one that, if the viewer is not moved by it, they may not have fully embraced or engaged with the film.
This is a film that can only become better in time and with repeated viewings.
One of the very best 10/10.
