Review of Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) by Sam F — 08 Feb 2013
It is beautiful film-making, well-acted, well-crafted and well-paced. It also makes me proud to see the great Malaysian actress, Dato' Michelle Yeoh in the movie as a Japanese geisha. The production design, make-up and costume designs are astonishing.
John William's score is simply beautiful and so oriental. It's funny, though, how Chinese actors are used to portray the Japanese geisha. Nonetheless, the cast is amazing. Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li are beautiful and great.
The film itself is a geisha; it entertains, it teases, it seduces, it's artistic, no more, no less. Just perfect. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and am impressed by it. For me, the highlight of the film, apart from the plot, would be the art direction and John William's score.
