Review of Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) by Soponwit W — 22 Feb 2010
Visually, a beautiful and gorgeous film to look at. Apart from that, the melodrama prevents us from actually relating to the characters or the story of the film. The whole thing just feels sugar-coated, and consequently there is a sense of incredible falseness in the story in terms of trying to convey what it was like to be a Geisha at that period of time in Japan.
Check out the cinematography, sets, costumes and maybe the sweeping score by John Williams in this film, but if you don't really care about those factors, it's missable.
