Review of Memento (2000) by Sam C — 25 Jun 2013
Memento is the film that put writer/director Christopher Nolan on the map, before Memento all Nolan had done was a short film titled Doodlebug (which I have not seen) and a very good film titled Following.
Following was a very good film but it nothing like Memento, to me Memento is a masterpiece and one of the best films I have ever seen. I found Memento to be mesmerizing, this is one of many greats by Christopher Nolan.
Everything works perfectly in this movie from Nolan's brilliant writing to the outstanding performances by the cast. What amazed me the most was the brilliant screenplay by Christopher Nolan. The story was so incredible but that's not what amazed me, it's the way the story was told.
This movie is shown backwards and I thought it actually worked out for the best because it was just unique and original. Seriously we need more films like this nowadays, at least Nolan's still in his prime.
Anyway, the story is just so fascinating and one of the most original story's I've ever seen on screen. Ever twist surprised me and like Following by the end of movie I was just shocked. Nolan also does a great job at writing the film's dialogue and all the unique characters.
Nolan proves that he is one of the best working directors in this movie because he does so many incredible things. One thing that he did to make the story better was show certain scenes in black and white and I thought that was a brilliant move.
He also gives you something to think about for days, it's been awhile since I've seen it and I'm still thinking about and I assume I will be for a few more days. One thing Nolan always does right is getting the cast to give it there all and that's the case for Memento.
Guy Pearce is a great actor and his performance in this movie is just mind blowing. I think this is his best performance of his career because he just knocks it way out of the park, he literally became his character.
The supporting cast is also stunning which includes Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantolino. Everything else is incredible in this movie. The cinematography, the editing, the score, it's all brilliant.
Memento is truly a masterpiece and it is a must see, please do yourself a favor and watch this movie if you haven't all ready.
