Review of Memento (2000) by Filius S — 13 Dec 2015
Memento is Chris Nolan's first pretty big budget film and a reminder to everyone that the word used in the title is not actually pronounced "momento". I really can't tell you much about this movie without ruining it, but I'll do what I can. First off, it's got Cypher and Trinity from the Matrix in it, which is kind of weird. The main character is Guy Pierce, who can't remember shit, so he tattoos stuff on his body and takes polaroids (they're like instagrams without like buttons and an antiquated share system). Unfortunately, he makes it really fucking cryptic so both he and the movie going audience are confused until the plot resolves itself.
The movie has that 90's grungy neo-noir grit in the same sort of way that The Mechanic or Se7en do, and does the non-linear storytelling thing kind of like a couple of other 90's movies. Like a lot of Nolan movies, this one can be confusing if you're mentally deficient, so you can either find charts, graphs and youtube clips online to help you out, or you can just watch something more tailored to your mental capacity like Spider-Man 2.
TL;DR - 8/10.
This is a great flick. It's pretty dark, but if you're not a baby child then you should be able to get wrapped up in the twisty-turny nuance provided by a young Nolan who really shows off his directorial chops.
