Review of Melvin and Howard (1980) by Rod A — 09 Jul 2010
Fortune, fragile and elusive, temporarily shines on the characters in Jonathan Demme's small film. Try as they might to escape whatever constrictions confine them, a glitch makes its inevitable appearance.
Demme's commentary on American life is so wonderfully accurate and understated. Robards, Le Mat, and Steenburgen deftly present folks pursuing a way out of their present circumstances. Despite his millions, even Howard Hughes needs to escape.
