Review of Melinda and Melinda (2004) by Eric R — 23 Jul 2008
One problem I noticed with this film is that the comedic and tragic stories presented just don't seem to connect with each other. The tragic and the comic stories take off in two distinctly opposite directions.
Even the characters of the Melindas are given totally separate identities and totally different personalities. Thus, there is no mirror image, no interconnection, no complementary elements between the story lines; making the film itself rather pointless.
The film might have redeemed itself if at least one of the tales had been complete and satisfying, but neither tale is particularly original or involving. The seemingly random crosscutting between the two stories doesn't help, being especially damaging to the comedy which isn't allowed to gain much needed comic momentum.
