Review of Melinda and Melinda (2004) by Marc G — 30 Jun 2013
Uneven. I liked the concept the stories overall were interesting but the execution was very uneven with some strong moments that were well performed in between many badly executed, overacted, and just silly and stupid scenes, especially in the comedy scenes.
Will Ferrell though funny at times was a bad casting choice I believe and I've never liked Amanda Peet; Chloe Sevigny and Jonny Lee Miller played their roles well, not great but good enough. Radha Mitchell's character started fairly well with some strong moments at the beginning but ended in some messy overacting and bad direction I believe.
She looked good in the comedy role but it was just silly and badly done overall. I still gave this a 3 out of 5 because it was entertaining enough and it was a good try and concept, but the execution was not at all great.
*Update; I just read that Woody Allen originally wrote this script specifically for Winona Ryder but because of her shoplifting conviction couldn't get her insured, and I can totally see how Ryder would have been perfect for the role.
As well Will Farrell's role was originally suppose to be played by Robert Downey Jr. who would have been a bunch better suit for this film, but he too could not be used because of his personal problems at the time also.
Too bad, because this film would probably have been much better with those two in it.
