Review of Melinda and Melinda (2004) by Ken S — 24 Mar 2014
Woody Allen tries something different, yet pretty much the same as anything else he has done. The story begins with two writers squabbling over whether life is inherently tragic or comedic, there buddy gives them the details to a story and then they each try to prove that the story is either tragic or comedic.
The idea if getting the same story but in different tones is cool, but the execution sucks. Both versions are well worn Allen territory, and he has done sadder movies with similar themes and comedies with similar premises.
The film flips back and forth between stories in a slightly confusing manor. The tragic story is tedious with few sympathetic or likable characters, the comedy also has weak characters and is just plain not funny.
It isn't Allen's best work, and it seems as if he is no longer fresh...luckily he bounced back in his next effort.
