Review of Melancholia (2011) by Rohit P — 03 Oct 2012
Melancholia is a character drama that showcase the art of digital filmmaking and the versatility of the medium. The film had me after the opening series of images set to an overture by Wagner...I think.
Anyways, there is something real and identifiable with each image and each one bleeds with surrealism. Kirsten Dunst's performance is outstanding. I really have not thought much of her since "Interview With A Vampire" and felt she was completely miscast in the "Spider-Man" movies, with a terrible performance to boot.
Melancholia is totally different and we see how talented this actor really is, as well as the rest of the cast. The film itself stands alone in large part due to it's composition. This doomsday story has been told a thousand times over but never like this.
Every frame is a painting that bleeds into our eyeballs and keeps us interested in the characters and their story. The pace is slower than most films these days but stick with it, it's worth it.
