Review of Melancholia (2011) by Jozef D — 12 Jul 2012
This was the most accurate depiction of depression I have ever seen. Von Trier adeptly and subtly slides us into Justine's bleak bipolar world, letting us figure out for ourselves what is wrong with her.
I have suffered from depression, and the picture Trier paints of the disease is hauntingly accurate: the random fits of overwhelming despair, the joyous moments of clarity, the effect is has on your loved ones, and the inability to do anything about it.
This being said, I found the film much too long with many scenes that dragged and dragged. But I still can't get some of the images out of my head, so good work Mr. Trier.
