An unsuspecting moviegoer looking for a timeless tale of the end of the world will be struck with confusion that the impending doom is not even mentioned until the second half of the film, and rather than an apocalyptic thriller, we receive a quiet drama that is slow, boring, and gloomy.
An unsuspecting film enthusiast will receive a beautiful art film that is symbolic, psychological, and meaningful. Upon further viewing, this film is indeed a quiet drama that explores depression, the hollowness of humanity, and the human psyche during an apocalypse.
It's beautifully shot, well-acted, and emotionally gripping, but it isn't without its flaws. Trier often sacrifices coherence and structure for artistry. Oftentimes, the elegantly written dialogue is interesting, but unnatural, not in its delivery, but the lines themselves.
Definitely a picture worth checking out.
