Review of Melancholia (2011) by Bob H — 21 Sep 2012

There were parts of this movie that I liked, but I didn't like the message, the acting, the directing, or the visual effects, and I despised the musical score. The first time that we attempted to watch this movie, my wife made me turn it off even before the wedding cake was cut. According to her, movie was not worth the cost of the electricity needed to illuminate the pixels on the TV. I reluctantly agreed, although I had actually been a little intrigued when the bride, still in her flowing wedding gown, had squatted to urinate in the middle of the golf course.

Well, the movie and strange young lady came on the Showtime again and I gave it another try because I believed that it was an interesting idea (having read "When Worlds Collide" back when I was a kid). Well, as it turns out, Melancholia was actually two interesting ideas. One idea where the earth is destroyed and one idea where a hot young woman does unseemly things because she hates everything organic. I like to call the two together, "When Ideas Collide", because this ole Pappy just can't figure out why they had to destroy the entire earth in order to punctuate a young woman's mental disorders. I did like the scene where Ms Dunst was reposing by the steam, basking in the LED-like blue-white light from Melancholia. Those were nice.

Pappy Bob's Pedestrian Opinion: Unless you are pursuing your Master of Arts in Pretentious Filmography or whatever that they call it these days, it would behoove you to avoid this one. But what the hell do I know.
