Review of Melancholia (2011) by Crystal D — 05 Sep 2013
Melancholia is many things. Beautifully shot is one of them. The camera work and score work really well together. It's an extremely slow paced movie and some parts do seem to drag. Personally I feel like the movie is showing not only a struggle with depression but the expectation to get over it, move on, just be happy.
I think Justine's fear stems from believing she will never be happy because she sees those around her with the things that are supposed to make you happy like marriage, work title, money, etc yet none of those people are truly happy either.
They simply put on a guise. Much like at the end when Claire suggests drinking wine as the world ends because she wants it to be "nice." The idea that people should hide when they are afraid or in pain.
