Review of Melancholia (2011) by Genevieve D — 30 Jul 2012
A highly tragic, depressive work of art, with strong, beautiful visuals and heart wrenching performances from Dunst, Sutherland, and Gainsbourg. This is not a movie for everyone but there's definitely something to appreciate here, and director Lars Von Trier accomplishes what he sets out to do, which is to display a womans descent into deep depression, a crumbling relationship between sisters, and the planet Melancholia's rapid collision course with Earth, and he does this with style and a unique emotional touch; the only fault I would give this is it's running time, as it's a bit too slow for my liking, but the end result is quite astonishing and worthy of a patient mind.
