Review of Megan Leavey (2017) by Tim M — 22 Nov 2017
Kate Mara is a hard sell as Megan Leavey and despite an interesting story her miscasting makes this hard to get through. Mara is in just about every shot so, if you can't but her you can't engage with the film. It's a shame. Edie Falco and Bradley Whitford play the divorced parents who hate each other. Not that's you'd know as the talented duo are hardly given anything to do.
If Leavey is a "war hero" as the movie wants to make you believe then if you are going to film "war" scenes you have to make them authentic and these were low budget scenes. The film never commits to what it should be and instead tries to tug the heartstrings. We're left with a director trying to get us to cry but secondary charters aren't developed enough to get us to care. This is an edited mess. This film should be burned and forgotten. Only viewers easily manipulated will like this which sadly may be many. The real star of this film is the dog (Rex) and relationship that Leavey and Rex cultivate. Again though the movie fails to commit to any of the avenues and left me empty. Final score 4.3/10.
