Review of Megamind (2010) by Ayu F — 22 Aug 2012
This was unfairly overshadowed by the inferior Despicable Me. Megamind is first-rate animation with a top story and characters with depth. There are plenty of reversals in the plotline that prevent the film from getting predictable.
It's also a very sophisticated kid's film. There are countless of jokes that only the adults would get and the theme is relevant and at times profound. I really have nothing negative to say at all about this little masterpiece.
A shame it didn't do better. My only guess is that the main protagonist doesn't exactly look very compelling. It was part of the reason I held off seeing it for so long. Perhaps, the character design could have been more unique? Nevertheless, it's remarkable how well written it is, the pacing just moves, and it even has an emotional heart.
(And heck, ending with MJ ain't a bad way to go.).
