Review of Megamind (2010) by Kendall I — 01 Oct 2012
I avoided this as long as I could because it was a Dreamworks film with Will Ferrell. Dreamworks has had a lot of kiddie flops and I despise most of Ferrell's movies. It wasn't half bad.
PLOT:Megamind (Will Ferrell) has been picked on his whole life, until he finds something he's good at-being evil. So he grows up to be the most despised villian in Metro City, always in a fight with Metro Man (Brad Pitt), the superhero in charge of the city, and stealing his female reporter friend, Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey), with his sidekick, Minion (David Cross), until one day when he finally succeeds in killing Metro Man. Megamind then rules the city, but he feels empty and regrets killing Metro Man, for he wants some hero to fight him and restore the order of things. So he creates a weapon that's use is to make someone a hero. He misfires and hits Hal, Roxanne's lazy, geeky cameraman (Jonah Hill). But he may just end up being the villian.. Also in all of this, Megamind puts a disguise up to get to know Roxanne, and he starts to fall in love with her. It's a thought-through plot, but not the best it could ever be executed. In one word, decent.
VOICES:The voice cast is very talented, and they all do a great job, even Ferrell! His tinge of comedy didn't bring the movie down as it usually will. Th shiners are Ferrell, Fey, Hill, and Pitt. Cross isn't the best I believe he could be.
SCORE:The score is pretty good by Hans Zimmer, but the soundtrack is even better with classic rock/pop playing through: Ac/DC, Guns N Roses, and even Michael Jackson.
ANIMATION:The animation is very detailed. I expected it to be as sloppy as Alpha and Omega, but it was actually extremely detailed.
OTHER CONTENT:Though this is a cheesy, child-directed Dreamworks movie, it has a certain feel about fitting in and changing the way things are. That scores it enough to be fresh right there-aside from animation and voice cast.
OVERALL,an ok Dreamworks film with a decently done plot, talented voice cast, pretty good score and even better soundtrack, detailed animation, and a great feel to it.
