Review of Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) by Jason R — 28 Jun 2008
In "Manhattan," Woody Allen tells Mariel Hemingway that she's "God's answer to Job." "Meet Me in St. Louis" is the classical Hollywood cinema's answer to Job (and, I suppose, Marxist film critics).
Though the "genius" part of the "system" is overstated by Bazin and Schatz (most Hollywood movies suck, and the primary culprit is the system's strict adherence to formula), "Meet Me in St.
Louis" is a glorious testament to the aesthetic potential of cinema as a collaborative medium.
