Review of Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) by Jennifer S — 20 Dec 2009
Meet Me in St. Louis is a delightful, candy-colored musical that takes place during a simpler time (1904, specifically) when trolley rides were exciting and people actually did cake walks at parties. Although Judy Garland and Lucille Bremer are great as Ester and Rose Smith, the elder sisters of the Smith clan who are dealing with their goofy beaus, the real treat here is Margaret O'Brien's turn as the hell-raising youngest sister, Tootie Smith.
Although Meet Me in St. Louis is cheesy in the way 1940's musicals tend to be, I'll be damned if it didn't warm my heart!
Plus, cake walks. Just sayin'.
