Review of Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) by Masorad ( — 25 Mar 2010
Minnelli's infatuation with Judy Garland rubs off in a lush technicolor way, and it's great to be in MGM's hands for a turn-of-the-century dream-family (Mary Astor a dowdy hausfrau?) slice-of-American-pie feelgood WWII diversionary musical.
The rear projection snafus in "The Trolley Song" are fun, Ma Kettle commands each scene she's in, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Xmas" still the best holiday song yet written. It ain't St Louis, it's Hollywood.
