Review of Meet Joe Black (1998) by Paul W — 11 Feb 2010
Ah, yes, death. This is not "The Seventh Sign" by any stretch, however it's not a bad movie. Pitt and Hopkins are quite good, although there's some nit-picking to be done. First, 3 hours? Seriously? We could have cut this down a bit, so be sure you've got plenty of time.
I hate to say this, but Pitt's hair was distracting. And one would think that "Death" would have a little bit more understanding of the human condition, I mean he's been around since the beginning of time, right? So, I was bit put-off by how "new" everything was to him - like he just fell out of the sky like Jeff Bridges in "Starman.
" And the ending is a bit too sappy. You know, it sounds like I hated it, but I didn't. I thought it was really quite good. How do you react in the face of death? How do you show death what it's like to really live life? (Helps if you're a media mogul with money to burn, yes?) I wonder what would happen if death asked some regular Joe to show him what it means to live? Would that be a more interesting movie? All in all, I give it a solid B.
Almost a B+, but 3 hours and the ending... can't do it.
