Review of Meek's Cutoff (2011) by Amanda S — 26 Jun 2012
I imagine this movie being fairly accurate in portraying what it was like on the Oregon trail in 1845, which makes me feel sorry for those settlers because it must have been very boring. Sure, this movie has great shots and good cinematography, and pretty good acting, but that doesn't make up for the unnecessarily tedious pace.
At parts it was exciting, and at times I did enjoy it, but what could've been a really interesting story, Meek's Cutoff takes the non compelling route and shows the tedious acts of these people who are obviously in hardship.
I dont need action and excitement in movies, actually quite the opposite. Take Before Sunset for example. The only thing that happened in that movie was walking and talking, but it still kept my interest and I loved it.
This movie doesn't do that though, and its a shame because I the oregon trail could be a really interesting story basis. Also, I really wouldn't care if any of these characters spontaneously combusted, which possibly is what the director wanted to happen, but I like having a connection with someone, anything.
Unfortunately, this movie did not catch my attention, because honestly, the most interesting part of the movie was when they were lowering the wagons down a hill. Thats pretty sad. However, this movie isn't terrible, but its also not very good.
