Review of Meatballs (1979) by Jason J — 14 Jul 2010
Bill Murray's movie debut sees him as a counsellor called Tripper at summer camp getting into all sorts of mayhem usually involving the senior counsellor Morty! As a comedy it's OK, it has it's moments but there would be better vehicles for Murray to showcase his comedic talents in future projects.
I was expecting something akin to Porky's except this would take place at summer camp but it's nothing of the sort which disappointed me a little. I honestly think this movie wouldn't be so funny without Bill Murray - he's the glue that binds this movie together.
Looks to me like he ad-libbed a lot of his lines. There's a great cast of characters - apart from Tripper, my favorite would have to be the geek Spaz. He's a funny guy. Meatballs is a great comedy and a must-see for Bill Murray fans.
