Essential Viewing: Yes.
Scorsese's first gangster flick! This is one of those landmark first movies that just have to be seen, and not just by Scorsese dorks and film geeks. The movie is badass too. When DeNiro strolls into the bar covered in red lighting with Jumpin Jack Flash playing, you are watching the reinvention of cool. Keitel holds his own opposite DeNiro and Scorsese shows early on why he would go on to become the greatest director in American history.
