Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Connor G — 09 Feb 2011
As one of Scorsese's earlier works he hadn't perfected his craft in this film. You can definitely see elements in the film that he went on to perfect in later masterpieces. The editing and tracking shots are excellently done.
The sound editing and mixing is practically flawless. DeNiro and the rest of the cast give great performances. The soundtrack and the acting both gave the film a great energy that isn't found in many crime movies.
The cinematography as a whole wasn't polished, and I found the lighting to be a major distraction. The main aspect of the film that is lacking is the story. It's a very loose plot that lacks direction.
It made me loose interest even with all of the other well done aspects. It had a lot of potential and I can't hate on it too badly because of what masterpieces it led to later in Scorsese's career.
