Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Aren B — 05 Oct 2008
Gritty, vulgar and colorful, much like the streets of New York City at the time. Scorsese's breakthrough project is a very confident street-level examination of Italian-American crime. It's never tries to ask larger societal questions and never deals with the Mafia as a whole; it merely deals with the problems the characters are faced with in the present.
"Mean Streets" lays out of the groundwork for the rest of Scorsese's career, and is a must watch for film aficionados and seventies' crime enthusiasts.
