Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Hans L — 12 Apr 2009
Forget What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing In a Place Like This? and Boxcar Bertha- this is Scorsese's proper debut. Harvey Keitel plays the pious Charlie simultaneously trying to keep his best friend (the loony DeNiro) on the straight and narrow whilst attempting to climb the local Mafia hierarchy.
Guilt and responsibility would have made a better title. Lean, mean and as heavy as it gets. Killer soundtrack to go as well.
