This is a great DeNiro performance, like nothing I've seen before. I just find it weird whenever I bring up his performance in Taxi Driver, everyone says: "have you seen Mean Streets?", but I've got to say Taxi Driver is far superior.
The thing this movie has on Taxi Driver is a fantastic soundtrack...and I mean that as hand-picked songs to fit a mood or environment (great example with slowmotion camera shots with Jumpin' Jack Flash).
..Taxi Driver has a far superior score...but to be technical, this was made first; maybe I'd think more if I saw it before Taxi Driver.
