Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Nate W — 31 Jul 2009
Scorsese always was the best director at depicting the urban forest as a centre of moral and physical decay, and in "Mean Streets" he showed the promise that he would eventually capitalize on is his later masterworks.
The film was an equally significant breakthrough for Robert De Niro, who steals every scene as a hotheaded punk. Scorsese's soundtrack is (as always) a unique blend, at times encroaching, but it doesn't diminish the impressiveness of this early effort.
