Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Liam K — 25 Feb 2011
I felt like something big was to happen at the end because of the usual Scorsese endings and the tension felt throughout, but it never did. I can't fault the film though as it was brilliant, original and quite funny at times (which I didn't expect).
Harvey Keitel's performance as a nervous and torn Charley dominated much of the screen time but instantly became De Niro's shadow when he appeared. De Niro's portrayal as Johnny Boy, the self destructive and almost psychotic thug reminded me of someone I went to primary school with.
Strange!
