Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Kami L — 22 Dec 2011
Wow, what a disappointment.
Scorsese did some great things in the 70's, but this is not one of them. Sure, there's attempt to be raw and bad ass, like Taxi Driver or Goodfellas, but this ain't even Casino.
Maybe it's the lack of good script, or that young Scorsey couldn't utilize De Niro & Keitel's talent back in 1973, but this is just incoherent mess. You can't get a hold of the characters, things don't go anywhere or do anything. Just violence and drama without a point. Sure, Mean Street tries hard. Too hard.
Many critics advertise this as "early Scorsese classic", but this movie is about as close to Taxi Driver than Norbit is to Beverly Hills Cop.
