Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Kevin S — 14 May 2012
After watching it again I'm bumping it up half a star. The lip dubbing didn't phase me at all this time but some of the camera work did because some of the shots were out of focus. I really enjoyed Robert De Niro's performance much more the second time around, especially at the end when he talks about borrowing money from everyone and then he burns the ten dollar bill.
Also one of my criticisms the first time I watched it was that Harvey Keitel's character Charlie seemed to be looking to religion for answers but now I realize that he wasn't looking for answers, he was paying for sins by being the only person that was trying to help Johnny Boy because "You don't make up for your sins in church.
You do it in the streets. You do it at home. The rest is bullshit and you know it".
