Review of Mean Streets (1973) by Augustine H — 01 Sep 2013
Well known for the first collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, the leading character is indeed Harvey Keitel. Picturing the ruthless lives of gangsters in New York, Mean Streets is not a bad attempt.
But considering Scorsese's later masterpiece Goodfellas, Mean Streets is unavoidably mediocre for the plot is going nowhere other than the vivid depiction. However, the maniacal De Niro did establish himself as a methodological actor and managed to play Travis Bickle, one of his best roles 3 years later.
