Review of Mean Girls (2004) by Andrew D — 08 Dec 2013

For years, I've been hearing people telling me over and over again to watch Mean Girls. Well, I finally saw it. While it did have its funny moments, I just don't understand why this has such a huge following.

The film follows Cady, a girl who recently became a high school student after years of being home schooled. When she arrives, she meets Janis and Damian, a couple of outcasts who instantly become friends with her.

One day, however, Cady ends up sitting with a group of girls known as the "Plastics," led by Regina George. Since Janis has had a rivalry with Regina since the 8th grade, she encourages Cady to play along with their attempted friendship so she can get her revenge.

However, the more Cady hangs out with the Plastics, the further she becomes from her true friends. I'm not saying that I didn't like the movie. In fact, I was happy I did. It's a sweet little film with some good actors and actresses in it.

The best of the bunch, however, was the man who played the principal. He had some of the funniest lines in the whole damn thing and constantly had me rolling with laughter. The biggest issue that I had with the film was that it was extremely predictable.

The second the premise was introduced, I knew how each act was going to play out. As the minutes counted on, I found myself growing bored with the film because I knew what was going to happen and when.

I know that Tina Fey is a funny comedian (in fact, she does a great job in this film), but she should have added a couple of things to this script to make it more enjoyable. In the end, I enjoyed Mean Girls for a first time watch, but I doubt that I'll ever see it again.

It's just too predictable and the fact that it has gained such a huge cult following completely eludes me. It's just a fine film, but nothing really special.
