Review of Mean Girls (2004) by Christopher E — 16 Nov 2015
Honestly, watching this today (10-25-15), I wouldn't have been able to separate this movie from any other movie about High School teens, but since this was made back in 2004, I'll give it a slight break.
This movie stars Lindsey Lohan, as her family has moved back from Africa and this is her first time in a public school. This movie hits every High School stereotype possible and although it has comedic moments, it is backed up by poor character development along with a plot that doesn't really make sense. I'll say that this movie knows it's purpose, and it caters to its market, but doesn't really appeal to everyone.
Nothing in this movie is really original, but there were a few comedic moments. The fact that the script and characters are so blunt at times can make the movie much more better, but it doesn't help the fact that there was no point to this movie and I didn't know why I was watching it.
The plot is nothing that gives us purpose, even if it is trying to send out a message about popularity and conforming to society. I don't feel like this movie was trying to be deeper about it and it feels really basic.
There were moments that made me laugh, but other moments that made me roll my eyes. There were some memorable quotes that have been used over and over in memes, which made me anticipate them coming. The jokes worked at times, but for the most part, I didn't even chuckle.
Like I said, nothing in this movie surprised me. The plot had no purpose and the characters were stereotypical and underdeveloped. I never felt like this movie made sense, even though it did fill me with a bit of laughter. 11 years later, you'll be able to find plenty of movies that are similar to this, but are made much better.
