Review of Mean Creek (2004) by Nick O — 12 Jul 2012
For a movie about teenagers, "Mean Creek" has the brains of an adult, all nerved and upset. Writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes's melodrama is just a slice of life that goes to show how much a life can sliced into broken bits and pieces in the span of a bad decision that can never again fit right in our heads, no matter how much we tell ourselves otherwise.
Parts Kelly Reichardt, Ang Lee, and Gus Van Sant, it's undeniably an individual voice from the mouth of a tortured soul. Or maybe it's just really fucked up. Either way, the thing's devastating.
Once "Mean Creek" meets its wanderlust of a gruesome twist with a collision, gasp and a thud, you'll only stop shaking yourself once its chills reach below the belt.
