Review of Me, Myself & Irene (2000) by -Andy I — 10 May 2010
Me, Myself and Irene stands as a testament to how great Jim Carrey is. A film based on a Schizophrenic police officer could be played by no other than him. This film is laugh out loud funny and one of my favourite comedy films.
Charlie Baileygates is a nice guy, a up-standing citizen and a member of the greatest law enforcement agency in the world. Rhode Island State Police. But that is Charlie's problem, he's too nice. No one takes his authority seriously and abuses his generosity, including his newly wed wife who cheats on him with a black dwarf limo driver. Finally Charlie cracks, developing a split personality named Hank Evans. An aggressive, sexually perverse and violent character, who is also actually hilarious. When Irene Walters is arrested and needs escorting back to New York and unluckily for Irene Charlie is given the job.
This film is without a doubt one of my favourite comedies. I used to watch this weekly as a young teenager and I still think its possibly one of Carrey's best performances. I have a feeling that this role was written for him as it fits his acting style so well and he really does pull it off. Renée Zellweger is also great as Irene, who learns to love Charlie despite his alter ego.
Me, Myself and Irene isn't just a comedy based on a schizophrenia. It is also a touching family drama, when Charlie is left by his wife to raise 3 African-American children, obviously illegitimate. He really sees them as his own, regardless of what anyone says and its touching to know that his children, who are hilarious, love him back.
Without a doubt a brilliant film, I am surprised it has such a low rating but the only critic I care about is myself! I'd recommend this a thousand times over. Brilliant comedy.
