Review of Me Before You (2016) by Katherine P — 08 Jun 2016
I kept hanging in there to the end of the movie, hoping that there would be some resolution to the narcissistic idea that the value of life is governed by one's ability to engage hedonistic pursuits, that Sam Claflin's character would realize that his worth to his family, his ability to love and be loved, could far outshine the difficulties of a quadriplegic existence.
But no, in the end we are presented with the notion that there is merit in the choice to suicide "with dignity." Luckily, in real life, we have the example of Joni Earecksen Tada to prove that the life of the quadriplegic can have massive value, and make profound differences, in the lives of millions around the world.
This movie did nothing to uphold that kind of hope to those who have suffered life-changing accidents. The brightest spot in this movie was Emilia Clarke's fashion style. That's about it.
