Review of Me Before You (2016) by Ng K — 05 Aug 2016
While Sam Claflin's performance conveys emotion and provides relatability to an otherwise distant character, the un-empowering characterization of Emilia Clarke's role and the overall tone of the film treat a controversial topic like euthanasia as a generic cookie-cutter romance.
The pacing is off during the entire movie. Even though there is great chemistry between the two leads, it takes around 41 minutes to feel empathy for Clarke's character and the epilogue tries too hard make you shed a tear and fails.
The soundtrack doesn't help either. Instead of setting the mood for scenes, the movie and the editing tell you how you should feel using Top 40 songs aimed at a teenage demographic. This causes the movie to not excel in any real way from similar films in the genre.
In the end, the movie tries to be different but fails by trying to soften the implications of the subjects it touches and doesn't provide for a real emotional connection with its characters due to the generic approach to romance.
