Review of Me Before You (2016) by Bailey P — 11 Jun 2016
A film that really draws you in due to the well drawn characters and the believability in which they are portrayed. Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin are magnetic as the leads and ooze chemistry throughout, so much so that you can only will for their plight to succeed.
It is mainly due to them that makes Me Before You really work. It is paint by numbers narratively speaking and does have the typical sad song that shoehorns lyrically to the meaning of the scene but these niggles are short lived as the characters are so engaging.
It is a tear jerking film and does hold a strong finale that works on many levels whilst sending out a message of hope and belief. Perhaps it won't be for everyone but if you allow yourself to be dragged into these character's world you will only come out in love with everything you just saw, despite issues that do arise.
The paralysed Will can be hard to empathise with considering he is boosted by the wealth within his family despite his situation, but if you are to let these things go and connect with the characters for their individual transformations you will leave the cinema feeling emotionally drained but highly satisfied.
