Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Daniel S — 22 Jun 2015
I was very excited for this after the rave reviews it got at sundance, plus im a sucker for the genre as perks of being a wallflower and spectacular now were both my #1 movies of their years, and im happy to say this is on their level and lived up to all my expectations, it's a perfect blend of humor and emotion, plus a multitude of classic movie references, some of which I may have even missed, as it's quick to point out, the film doesnt go by the usual plot points of most teenage romance films, it goes into some dark unexpected areas that I even didn't fully see coming, it's also very visually inventive, with lots of creative shots, music choices, editing, and even claymation sequences, cooke is great as the titular dying girl, and mann is believable, even if not always likable as the lead, the kid who plays earl is good, tho we actually dont see a whole lot of him, all 4 of the adult roles are actually played by for the most part comedic actors-offerman, shannon, britton, and hell, even shane from walking dead, but they all do good jobs, the ending sequence is especially great and poignant and my favorite of the movie, as of now id day this is my 2nd favorite movie of 2015 behind mad max fury road.
