Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Steve H — 11 Jul 2015
This is a very well done drama/comedy. The film is very well written. But, it also works so well because of the principal lead, Greg (Thomas Mann). The young actor carries the movie. He is the narrator. He can be found in virtually every scene. The film is his story.
There are many comedy elements throughout. It's not a laugh-out-loud comedy; but rather a more relaxed, gentle type of thoughtful fun. All of this fun takes place in the face of the developing friendship of Greg with a girl he barely knows. She has contracted a blood cancer. Greg has a jaundiced view of his senior year in high school. There are a lot of universal truths about living through high school.
Greg seems estranged from everyone. Including his best friend, Earl (Ronald Cyler), whom he refers to as a co-worker. They make mocking films based upon older real movies.
The film is a little quirky. The tale is very well told. It was a good trip to the flics.
