Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Rob S — 25 Jul 2015
I would have probably given this movie a 7/10, but this movie was very entertaining to me with its constant film references, making it an 8/10 in my book.
While this film is visually interesting at certain times, I felt the look of the film could have been improved overall - a lot of the time scenes would look not only unsaturated, it almost looked plain gray. I guess this is probably intentional since the film deals with the gloomy topic of a "dying girl," but the unsaturated colors simply made it seem boring at parts.
Going back to the introduction, you should definitely see this movie if you consider yourself to be a film buff or if you like the classics. Half of the movie is either movie references or Greg and Early actually making terrible film parodies such as "Eyes Wide Butt," "The 400 Bros," "A Sockwork Orange," and many more with hilarious titles. The sad thing is I think this reference to film is the best aspect of the film, and it barely touches on the actual story of the film.
This next part is a spoiler: In my opinion, this is a very bad device the filmmakers used to make you more emotional towards the end of the film. Greg says at least twice to the audience that the "dying girl" doesn't die, but then she does. To me it wasn't even emotional - I'm not fed up with the fact that this was a lie, I just think this was done to make the ending sadder which was a stupid aspect.
Overall it is a nice story if you're looking for something like "The Fault in Our Stars" but with a slightly darker tone and a lot more humor.
