Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Antonio M — 19 Sep 2015
I was very excited about this movie after seeing the trailer. It reminded me a lot of The Fault in Our Stars, but with more comedy. After seeing the movie, there deffinetely were many similarities with TFIOS, but I have to admit I prefer this movie over TFIOS.
The story is about Greg. A somewhat normal highschool boy who barely has any friends and is socially awkward. After one of the girls from his school is diagnosed with leukemia, his mother makes him hang out with her to make her feel better.
Both him and her don't want to hang out at first, but that quickly changes as they discover they have lots in common. Sure, it sounds quite cheesy and uninspired, but the movie is waaay different than what you'd expect from a movie like this.
The movie's characters are very likeable and you care about what happens to them. The movie looks great and has an 'indie' feel to it. The way the movie looks, the angles and how the camera moves is very different from what I've seen lately.
The acting is fantastic! Greg, Earl and Rachel seem like real people at times. The movie has lots of comedy in it. There were many moments where I found myself laughing out loud. I loved how Greg was also a narrator in the movie.
His comments on things are very amusing. As expected, this movie is also very emotional at times. This movie approaches its main subject from both a serious and a non-serious point of view. Now, I haven't read the novel, and I didn't know there was a novel until I checked if there was one after seeing the movie, so I can't really say how different it is from the book, but I really want to read the book now, and I probably will.
All in all, I haven't been this satisfied with a movie since I saw X Plus Y. It's a very entertaining movie with great acting, an awesome sense of humour, likeable and amusing characters and not overly emotional.
I would deffinetely recommend checking this movie out no matter what genre you like, this is really worth seeing. Think of it as Napoleon Dynamite meets The Fault in Our Stars.
