Review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015) by Abhinandhan D — 30 Sep 2015
Me and Earl and the Dying girl is a quirky coming of age film that tells the tale of Greg, an awkward high school kid who has a negative outlook on life being forced to hang out with Rachel- a girl diagnosed with leukaemia by his mom.
Me and Earl and the dying girl got rave reviews when it premiered at Sundance and was one of my most anticipated movies of 2015. After watching it, I feel that it is a tad overrated but is still a really unique film that manages to side step most of the cliches usually found in this genre.
Cinephiles will particularly enjoy the homages to classic hollywood and foreign films that the movie makes since the main characters are movie fans themselves. The writing is really witty and all the characters feel unique which is the strongest aspect of the movie.
Its also really well acted all around. My flaw with Me and Earl and the dying girl is that it tries really hard to set itself apart from the sentimental movies in the genre like TFIOS but ends up stumbling in the third act when it gets caught in said cliches.
Nevertheless, Me and Earl and the dying girl is definitely worth checking out due to its message and quirkiness. B+.
